Coaching and Context
Managers can have a wide range of skills. The two that I value most are coaching and context. I do my best to provide that for others as well.
We all have a limited view of the world and the various aspects of any situation. Additional context is one of the greatest gifts. Each new bit of information and extra vantage point can help you come up with a better idea.
Even with access to a lot of information, we can get stuck in our thinking. It’s easy to over index on a specific aspect. Having another person to ask you questions can help you fully think through a problem.
If your manager doesn’t provide extra context or help you learn to think through new situations, find a mentor or friend who can. If you’re a manager or mentor, check in to see if you are offering enough coaching and context to folks.
